Autumn, from a yogic perspective

As summertime draws to an end and we begin the transition into Autumn we see beautiful poems or inspirational memes that talk of following nature’s lead… changing, shedding, letting go and releasing that which no longer serves us (and instagram loves that!).

We can at times relate this to our regular yoga practice, deepening our meditation, repeating our mantras when we are working with a specific and tangible desire to shift something within us/our lives that doesn't feel comfortable or that no longer fits the person we are or wish to be.

But what about the realities and responsibilities in our lives that we simply can’t or don’t want to just “let go” of? That which we have no choice but to show up for every day.  What about those patterns and behaviours, past experiences that are long held and deep within us, some we may not even be aware of whilst we are on the move, reacting, coping, doing and “getting by” in life.

Perhaps then we can look to nature, and the change of seasons with a different perspective.

We can take inspiration from the way the trees and plants hold firm, steady and stoic amongst the winds and weathering the storms of winter - being patient, still and taking each day as it comes. By looking to the way nature endures in this time perhaps we can take heed.. ourselves also breathing, rooting down, grounding, feeding and supporting one another via connections that cannot always be seen but are certainly felt. In the same way that nature is accepting and consistent holding steady amongst the challenges and change, present in that moment, resilient, adaptable yet quietly optimistic of a brighter future.

Going to a yoga class isn’t going to change your life or “cure” you.. whether or not that’s what you wish for. Going to a yoga class isn’t about “leaving behind” anything at the door and emerging a different person. BUT going to a yoga class may help you to notice where you are right in this moment; show you how it feels to be present, patient and aware. To help you perhaps begin to feel comfortable and accepting of where you are right now, quieting the thoughts that are clouding your judgement, that aren’t really you and gently show you the way to who you are. Your true self. It’s already there.

There’s many seasons in nature and within ourselves. There’s beauty in nature and within ourselves. If we take the time to pause and observe we may just notice and appreciate nature, and ourselves, in all its wonderous, evolving glory.
